Understanding Ifa, Ori, and Authentic Spiritual Growth

Many people come to Ifa seeking answers, healing, protection, or a deeper connection with their spiritual path. Some already know Yoruba spirituality, while others are discovering it for the first time. Regardless of where a person begins, there are important truths that should be understood before taking any steps into the sacred traditions of Ifa and Orisa worship.

God Comes First

One of the greatest misunderstandings about Ifá is the belief that the Òrìṣà are above everything else or that spiritual power can be controlled and directed solely by human desire.

In authentic Ifá tradition, we recognize that Olódùmarè, the Supreme Creator, is the source of all existence. Every blessing, every opportunity, and every spiritual force originates from the Creator.

We are not the center of the universe, nor do we control it.

Humility before God is one of the foundations of spiritual growth. Before prayers, sacrifices, or divination, we acknowledge the Creator and give thanks. Without this understanding, it becomes easy to approach spirituality with ego rather than wisdom.

Ifá Is Not About Controlling the Òrìṣà

Many people today approach spirituality as if it were a product that can be bought.

They believe purchasing sacred objects, receiving initiations quickly, or collecting spiritual items will automatically bring blessings and power. This is not the way of Ifá.

The Òrìṣà are not possessions. They are divine forces deserving of respect, reverence, and proper spiritual understanding.

Authentic spiritual growth does not come from collecting objects or chasing titles. It comes through character, discipline, humility, prayer, and guidance from qualified elders who have dedicated their lives to the tradition.

Ori: The Most Important Òrìṣà

Before seeking power from any external source, we must first understand Ori.

Ori is often described as our inner head, our higher self, and our destiny. It is the divine consciousness within us that guides our lives and connects us to our true purpose.

In Ifá, Ori is of the highest importance because:

No Òrìṣà can help us more than our own Ori.

In reality, initiation is a serious commitment and should only occur when divination confirms it is necessary and when the individual is spiritually prepared.

Not everyone is meant to become a priest or priestess. Not everyone needs every initiation.

Be Careful Who You Trust

As interest in Ifá continues to grow worldwide, many people claim spiritual authority without proper training, lineage, or experience.

This makes discernment extremely important.

A genuine spiritual elder should:

• Respect the traditions and sacred teachings.
• Guide people toward spiritual growth rather than dependency.

No one should pressure another person into expensive ceremonies, make unrealistic promises, or claim instant solutions to life’s challenges.

The True Purpose of Ifá

Ifá is not a shortcut to wealth, power, or status.

It is a sacred path that teaches us:
